APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP
Keegano is proud to be a diverse and thriving co-op. We attribute this to the commitment of our membership to the continued growth and success of our community. Application to our co-op is welcome. Any applicants will be reviewed based on clearly-defined criteria:
An understanding of co-op principles and commitment to upholding them. Some of these include attending membership meetings, serving on committees and volunteering during community events and activities.
- RESPONSIBLE FINANCIAL RECORDS
- COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
- NEIGHBOURHOOD RESPECT
- POSITIVE INTERACTIVE ATTITUDE
WHY CHOOSE US?
Co-operative living offers the benefit of a close and diverse community that is run on the principles of shared responsibility and inclusion.
Social opportunities are frequent, with the highlights of the year being the summer and winter solstice celebrations. Community potlucks, games nights and “pub nights” are also held at various times throughout the year.
Members know each other in the co-op, providing a safe and nurturing environment for all families, whether they include children, elderly members, members with disabilities, or single members.
A monthly newsletter keeps all members informed of community news and activities, and regular minutes and updates from all committees allow members to remain up-to-date on the various committees’ activities.
APPLICATION PROCESS
STEP 1 – ATTEND A KEEGANO ORIENTATION. Further down in this section you will find the Orientation schedule with the dates for the upcoming orientations and where you can register to attend. The orientation is where you will learn details about life in Keegano and how a housing co-op works along with meeting some of the members of our membership committee. After the presentation, application forms will be handed out. Completed applications can be dropped off in person or mailed. Application forms can also be obtained directly from the Manager – but will only be accepted after you have attended an orientation. All applications are responded to by email.
STEP 2 – INTERVIEW & DECISION When there is a vacancy all the applications on file are reviewed and interviews are scheduled. Once the team has completed the interviews, they give their recommendation to the membership committee and the chairperson takes the recommendation to the Board of Directors. Once the Board has given their approval, the successful applicant is contacted by the membership chairperson.
STEP 3 – NOTIFICATION, OFFER & MOVE SCHEDULE After your interview and if you have been selected for membership an email will be sent in addition to notification by phone. You will then be directed to contact the Manager who will instruct you on details of the move-in process Additionally, your host family will be arranged. A host family helps you learn your way around the co-op, introduces you to your new neighbours, brings you to meetings and social activities and helps you understand what your responsibilities are as a new member. If a unit is not available, you will be kept on file – if you so desire – for up to one year.
